The Valley Witches Coven

A Hellboy fan comic.

Story & Inspiration

The world's greatest paranormal detective, Hellboy, is called back to a small town in Norway he helped nearly a decade ago. His old friend Nora, a lifelong resident, worries about the paranoia her town is showing because of past legends of the evil Witch coven and the Coven that ruled their valley centuries ago. Hellboy and Nora set out into the mountains to see what has the quiet town so scared and discover the coven still lives, and they were lured into a trap. They seek to resurrect their ancient queen through Nora, the queen's only daughter.

Hellboy is my all time favorite comic book character. I re-read the full omnibus about once a year. I was durning my yearly reread that I also learned about the 1621 Vardo Witch trials of Norway. I was itching to start a new passion project in my spare time and wasn't to practice some scenery and story telling I hadn't attempted before. In a way I also wrote this as a character study.

The main character I developed for this story, Nora, was made as somewhat of a contrast to Hellboy. Hellboy's very existence is a mystery through most of his story but he's constantly told throughout his life that he will bring about horrible things to the world and he's a fool for not realizing how powerful he is. His father created him to be used as a tool of destruction. That's all he's viewed as. Nora in a way is the opposite. She's the daughter to the most powerful witch that ruled the region but doesn't know it. She too is powerful beyond her comprehension but her mother spent her life protecting her, to save her from becoming a tool because of her mothers past. She is treated as a human rather than an instrument of destruction. That is, until the coven captures her.
